Chess game made with recycled PVC pipe

Hi today we will make a Chess game using a PVC pipe!

Remember this project is designed to recycle things please DO NOT buy the main material (PVC pipe) you can get it for free at construction sites or demolitions, they throw a lot of it to the garbage and our goal is to recycle some of it.

!!!you will use low to moderate dangerous tools be carefull and use the propper industrial safety gear!!!

First lets make a checklist of the materials you will need:

-PVC pipe.
-Chlorine (just the one we use at home for cleaning purposes)
-Acrilyc paint (black, white).
-Superbonder or any cyanoacrylate glue.
-sandpaper

Now the materials you might need:
(these materials are only for finishing purposes you can do the project without them).

-Sand (construction workers will gift you a little, give one of them a nice sandwich in return for the favor, being nice doesn't hurt)
-white glue (wood glue).
-Epoxy putty.

Now the tools you will need:

-Moto tool.
-press.
-Hacksaw.
-Cutter.
-art brushes.

let's start!

Measure the pipe with a marker, for my design i used 1 and 2 centimeter pieces (0.39 and 0.78 inches)

Now Cut the pipe with the hacksaw, you will need 44 small pieces and 48 big ones, is better if you make some spare ones.
when you cut the pipe try to cut close to the press so the movement get less annoying and your cut will be accurate.

Clean the burr on the pieces with the cutter, if some of them are not straight use the sand paper to correct them, is possible that the pipe had some dirt from the construction site or place you gathered it so when you are done cutting wash your hands and then wash the pieces with water and Chlorine.

Now is time for some superbonder! i will show you my chess game and how i joined the pieces to made it, my game will look very different because i used some finishing techniques i will show you later.

Say hello to the rook, i used 2 small pieces and 1 big one on the top, after i glued them with some superbonder i made the battlements with the mototool using a carbide disk

The Bishop is made with 1 big piece 1 small and half a big one for the top, in order to make it look like a catholic bishop i cutted one big piece in half by the diagonal if you dont catch how i did it dont worry there i will soon upload a youtube video with this instructional, also there is more photos where you can see it better.

OMG is the commander in chief and his best spy!!! (king and queen) some Chess lore here, the King actually represents any Noble with an standing army, usually they have a Christian cross because they represent european Feudal lords, the queen is actually the spy, which is why it moves so long and almost everyway, it represents its ability to infitrate enemy territory, is represented as a queen because many arranged marriages were used just as an excuse to place an spy in a position of power back in the day.

as you can see i used 2 big pieces for both bodies and two small ones for the heads and crowns, again i used the mototool to make the little cross and crown details on both figures, i cutted the upper big part on the queen to make it resemble a female body, also i used some extra material to make an armor for the king, you dont need to do those if you dont want to, just be sure the crowns tell who is who, and use sand paper to make the queen a little smaller.

Here you can see how the pieces are done compared to each other and in raw material so you can get a better idea on the design.

As you can see some are painted in black with acrylic, that is done so the white glue can stick on the PVC otherwise the white glue wil not hold propperly because is water based. please notice my second king doesnt have a cross but a moon instead, that is because i wanted my chess game to represent the crusades and he is the muslim Saladin, making the one with the cross the king of Jerusalem!

Now lets talk about finishing, you can just paint black and white or any colors you want, then you will be done, but if you like that "stoney" appearance mine have then here is how to do it.

First use a brush to apply some white glue on the figure.

As you can see i use PET bottle bottoms as pallettes and working vases, did i told you i LOVE recycling? well bottle bottoms have 5 cavities where you can combine paint, dilute up to 5 tones or combine up to 5 tones of 2 different colors awesome right? and you will be avoiding some of that annoying PET going to the garbage can, in other projects i will show you how to use what is left of the bottle so we can recycle and save this planet once and for all!

After the glue is on the figure roll it on the sand so it sticks on the glue, use a flat brush to apply sand where is still white, dont worry too much about the little stones, if one or two stick they will ugrade that "stoney" finishing.

apply the glue and sand only on the figures you already have painted black with acrylic, it will not work without the black coating, remember, water and plastic are not friends.

you will need a place to grab the figures, so do a part first on all the pieces, i did bottoms first as you can see, let the glue dry completely before doing the upper parts, if the glue is still fresh, you can help the process using a heat gun but be very carefull  not to apply excessive heat, it will make the water on the glue evaporate way too fast making bubbles and ruin the figure.

Here you can see how the figures should look after the white glue/sand procedure is done (left) and the other army just with the black coat (right)

when the glue is dry is time for painting againg, i did a black coat again and then some "dry brush" with grey and then a lighter gray, at the end i just used some red and yellow water paint.

on these last pictures you can see my set, you can choose which kind of finishing you like more, you can just leave the pieces with dark grey and light grey or black and white, not use sand etc. is up to your taste.

keep following, i will post the lessons on how to use the dry brush technique soon, also i will do the Youtube version of this and other tutorials, if you like this project please share with your friends and follow us:
